Emmaline Berg (41' 3.5") brings home an outstanding 2nd place finish at the highly competitive All State Meet and Rosie Keogh runs her best 2 mile ever becoming only the second girl in Holliston H.S. and TVL history to break the 11 minute barrier running 10:59.84.
This was a special night for Massachusetts girls track in general. Never in the history of the MIAA All State meet have 6 girls gone under the 3 minute mark in the 1,000m, there has never been more then 2 girls over 40 feet in the shot, (this year there were 4 girls)and there has never been more then 2 girls under 11 minutes in the 2 mile, (this year there were 5). To say the competition was brutal would be a gross understatement.
In the shot (smallest girls in the competition)Emmaline and the young lady from Newton who won showed that this was an event that size may matter but only if you can marry it to explosiveness, grace and the extraordinary balance required in the circle. This is technique in a highly skilled event. Emmaline goes into the New England meet with the best throw in New England at 42' 6". This throw also has her ranked approximately 19th in the nation which is pretty impressive company.
The 2 mile was dominated by Emily Jones of Bromfield, the number one runner at this distance in the country, but the excitement of the race was the race for 2nd through 5th place. All four girls managed to squeeze across the line within 2.38 seconds of each other. Rosie had the race of her life to this point. During the course of that one race Rosie ran splits that would have won almost all of our dual meets this year in the 1,000m (3:16), mile (5:26) and the 2 mile (10:59.84). It was a truly wonderful display of guts for all of those girls involved. Rosie's time is the 6th fastest 2 mile run in the country this year. However most of the country runs the 3200 meters and when converted she is ranked a still lofty 21st.
Emmaline and Rosie will now move on to the New England Meet on the 6th and both have qualified by a wide margin for the Nationals the following weekend.
In the long walk back to the parking lot Coach Vigue and I could not contain our appreciation for the hard work and effort it takes to accomplish what these two have done this season. Well done Emmaline and Rosie!!!
